[MIX] Mr Minimax – The Goodnight Mistress Vol.1

Here it is people, the project so secret that only a select few of you will ever have heard of it. After sitting on my hard drive for months on end, I have finally decided that it is time to unleash Vol.1 of the soon to be legendary mix series; The Goodnight Mistress. The wait may or may not have been due to poor internet connections stopping me for uploading, but that really is irrelevant at this stage of the game.

As indicated by the ‘Vol.1′ portion of the title, and quite possibly by line above where I refer to the ‘mix series’ this is only the beginning of The Goodnight Mistress. Volume 1 sets the scene nicely for what is to come. Hopefully the tracklisting will do a pretty good job of explaining what it’s about…

ENJOY, GENTLY.

The wait is nearly over.

Today I am a very happy boy.

I have just found out that Grizzly Bear’s new album Veckatimest is due for release on May 26th. Anyone who knows me will know how excited about this I have been,  and now with a date in sight I can really start to get myself worked up.

If you’re not familar with Grizzly Bear, get familiar. Their 2006 album Yellow House is one of my all time favourites, a truely amazing piece of music, combining elements of Folk, Pop, Baroque and Prog Rock to create a masterfully original sound. From the sound of the two new tracks they’ve put up on their myspace, the new album will be slighty more on the poppy side of things, but that is no bad thing. Anyhow, my description will never really do the music justice, so check them out for yourself.

My Mix for this months Brap Podcast is a bit different to my usual DJing style.
I’ve gone down a much more laid back route than previous mixes, and picked out a selection of my favourite hip hop, downtempo and chill out tracks.
It’s my first mix in this style, but using mainly tracks that have been favourites in my collection for years, so it was a lot of fun. If you like this, keep an eye on my blog, you can expect to see more material in this vein in the future.

Enjoy.

[Review] Sam Hell – Gun Club w/ Remixes (Sinister) SIN035

Sam Hell – Gun Club w/ Remixes (Sinister) SIN035

A. Original
B. Hedflux Remix
C. Badlands Ruffty Buffty Remix
D. Rektchordz Remix

This package sees Sam hell making his third release on Sinister in the last 12 months, with 3 of the scenes brightest new sparks on remix duties.
The original mix is a classic slice of Hell, big chunky drums back up a ferocious bass line, and a variety of squeaks and bleeps flutter across the top, adding a quirky edge to what is otherwise an unrelenting slice of dirt. The production is slick and polished, and everything gels beautifully. Call it breaks, call it house, regardless of genre, this is bound to cause serious damage on a lot of dancefloors.
Next up, psy-breakers Hedflux take the reins and deliver an outstanding remix. Deep and brooding, with more twisted psy attitude than you can shake a hippy at. This is my pick of the bunch, most definitely a classic Sinister track.
Badlands take things in a much housier direction with their effort, making good use of the minimal vocal from the original and turning it into a choppy percussive line. This mix is certain to be a hit with lovers of wonk.
Finally, Rektchordz rounds up the package with a filthy electro version. Sticking closely to the original melody, but twisting things to a much harsher level of filth. Rektchordz seems to be going from strength to strength and this remix is yet more evidence of his skill.
All in all, this is a pretty outstanding package, with something to suit everyone. It’s refreshing to see a release of such high quality, with all the tracks coming from relatively new producers.
