BloFiYoToRea. Or something like that…

Well well well well well,

What do we have here? A blog from Minimax not trying to force a mix down our throats, or some other ghastly act of self promotion. Blow me down!

So, to business! This month (November, blimey the days just fly by, don’t they!) I’m taking part in NaBloWriMoFoShoYo -  National Blog Writing Month to it’s mother (forgive me, I made the last three ‘o’s up.) – which will see me taking on the seemingly impossible feat of writing a blog post everyday! SRSLY! A quick scroll down the page will give you a fairly good idea of my usual posting frequency… You get the idea. But enough preamble, let us get the meat in this pie!

This weekend has been a fantastic few days for discoveries. Today I dug out a CD that’s been in my possession for several months now. Sitting beside my bed, in suitcases, on my computer desk, constantly teetering just on the edge of action, but never quite making it out of the case and in into my ears. I was sent it by a rather nice chap who went by the name ‘Stanton Delaplane’.  I encountered him way back in the midst of time, at a gig at Start the Bus…

Gomez were headlining, Tom and Ben doing an acoustic set as it happens, which was bloody brilliant, but another story all together. The support hadn’t been announced, but being the keen music geek I am, I got there nice and early hoping to find some new musical loveliness. And it was loveliness I came to, oh my brothers, but not the sort I was expecting.

When I arrived, Stanton Delaplane was mid way through a set of beautiful guitar drone and a multi-part harmonies with himself. God bless loop stations. He very kindly offered to send anyone in the audience a CD, if they gave him their address. Luckily I managed to find a felt tip pen and a scrap of paper, and scrawled my address in a blur of red letters that instantly expanded to twice their size the minute they fell onto the paper.

A few weeks later and still no CD, I assumed that my note had been  illegible, until one morning I came down to find a package waiting for me, containing an EP entitled “Mandibular Sweetmeats” a curious name if ever I heard one. Unfortunately, the CD arrived at a time when things were a little hectic in my life. I was moving house what seemed like three times a week, and spent the majority of the summer living out of suitcases and boxes. The disc got put aside and spent the next three months being tossed about, dug out for a definite hearing, then lost again in the mess that inevitably follows where ever I rest my head for more than a few days. Until today.

On the bus on the way back from town, the words Mandibular Sweetmeats popped into my head, but I couldn’t think why. I narrowed it down to being the name of an album or EP, but with absolutely no idea who the artists was. I got home and googled the name, and up pops Stanton Delaplane. After a few minutes of rooting about, I finally found the CD and put it into my computer. I’m pleased to report that it was definitely worth the wait.

A baroque folk mix of beautifully defined guitar lines, wall of sound layers of drone and some really fantastic harmonies, this is good stuff. Anyhow, this is the part where I will inevitably fall into painful journalistic clichés and sickly sweet arse kissing if I write anymore, so I’ll leave it to you to try and form an opinion on his sound, based on the tracks up on his myspace. You never know, if you write to him he might point you in the direction to pick up a CD with his music on it.

I was also going to tell you about a cellist I saw at the fagoween (all will be explained) party last night, but unfortunately I haven’t got a clue what her name was… I shall endeavor to find out and include a bit about her in tomorrows post. I’m sure you can probably wait until then.

NSB NYE CD SWAP (Oh, hello)

Blimey, it’s been a while since I graced this pages with my presence. Instead of just filling in a several thousand word report on what I’ve been doing over the last… lots of months, I’m just going to cut to the chase and tell you about a new project, started very recently.

The NSB CD Swap for NYE 2009/2010

The lovely Henry aka Skywave Systems, who runs the Myuzyk net label, set this up on the www.nuskoolbreaks.co.uk forum just the other day. The concept, for those not already aware, is that group of forum members, all put together a mix/compilation cd, complete with packaging and all. When all the names are in (this is capped at 30 participants) everyone produces as many copies as there are names on the list. They send all of these to the person organising the swap, and he then sends out a package to each entrant with a copy of each mix in. Simples.

The numbers for this are steadily building, with about 26 already signed up. So far there are a lovely selection of names already joined, people who readers of this blog will most likely be familiar with; DVNT, Jung, Benny(Metroboy, Ben&Lex, everythingelseunderthesun), James Fox, Clodhoppa(midnightminustwo boss man) and of course, Henry Skywave himself. Needless to say, there are going to be some pretty special mixes coming out of this.

Anyhow, what with being the massive over achiever I am, I’ve already finished my first mix (that’s right, I’m putting together two CD’s worth of goodness), and made good progress on the cover.

So far, the mix is a pretty hectic affair, with lots of techno, electro, breaks, glitchy, heavy, bassy nonsense, a little portion of hip hop, and some stupidly fast tempos here and there. I’m pretty chuffed with it so far. I’ll keep you up to date with the happenings of this.

I must be off now… Bestival is tomorrow and I haven’t packed a sausage. Ciao.

[Review] Halogen – Recycled Broadcasts EP [Maternity]

Halogen – Recycled Broadcasts EP [Maternity]

This debut EP from Brighton based producer Halogen, also see’s the first release on brand new net-label ‘Maternity’.
The release is comprised of four tracks of deep and sexy downtempo electronica, with big nods towards hip hop and idm.
Opener; Not The Remix sets the scene nicely, with a set of lush pads, beautiful harmonies, and plenty of rhythmic glitch. The production is nicely polished.
Manilla takes things down a couple of steps in tempo, a classic moody downtempo track.
A short and well placed vocal sample gives way to some superb scratching effects.
Next up; Previous Future is probably the most idm influenced of the bunch, with layers of skittering double time glitch rhythms giving a sharp edge to the lush depth of the melody.
The closing track; Transmission, is a much more ambient affair, using a more abstract set of sounds, and replacing the strong beat of the others with a selection of subtle glitches.
Overall, this is a very strong debut, both for the artist and the label. The production is well rounded, slick and has a cohesive sound throughout the release. Grab this now, you won’t be disappointed.

Blimey, that was quick.

Time flies when you’re having fun, or so they say.

In that case I must have been having an absolute whale of a time this past week.

It feels like about three days since I was sat on this here computer moaning to the internet about how intolerably exciting my Friday night was, my early night about to go tits up leaving me to face an evening drinking stout and sneering at my housemates choice of televisual entertainment. Goodness me aren’t I a happy character.

Turns out, it’s been seven whole English days.

Achievement levels have been at an all time high this week. The website that has been the bane of my life for the last few months is finally finished! (Although it won’t go live for a while, so don’t get too excited.) I can safely say that unless someone wants to pay me a wholesome sum of money to do so, I will not be undertaking a project of that nature again in the foreseeable future.

I have also put together a few new mixes. One is for the lovely chaps over at Olo Radio who are featuring me on their podcast, tying in nicely with a couple of remixes I’ve just completed for the rather wonderful OLO Worms. That mix features a nice mix of bits and bobs. Aphex, Fly-Lo, The Egg, Jamie Lidell all star alongside many others. Naturally I will be posting full spam when it finally becomes available.  The other mix, is a a purely personal affair, no podcasts, radio shows or sponsorships on this one, just some tunes that I felt like putting together in order. Lots of good old fashioned “proper electro” goodness. Again, full spammage to come in the near future.

Oh, I seem to have lost my flow. Dammed forums.

Another great achievement of the week, has been finally coming round to the music of The Chap.I bought their album ‘Mega Breakfast’ after having heard the track ‘They Have a Name’ on the excellent (and totally free) ‘Bleep Clash’  compilation from, surprisingly, Bleep.com.  For quite some time I really didn’t know what to make of it. The tunes are good, if a little eccentric, but the vocals sway from shouty indie, through the middle of the road, right up to mock opera silliness. The lyrical surrealism also proved a little rich for me, whether it’s intended to be ironic or simply off the wall, I wasn’t a fan. However, something inspired me to take another listen this week, and by Jove, it sounds fantastic! While spending several lines of text slating a band probably isn’t the best way  to convince you of their greatness, I think it’s important to set the scene. Everything I felt before still stands, but for some reason it works. They have elements of electronica, indie, show tunes, and lots and lots of good old fashioned pop in there, and once you embrace the quirk, it warms you up a treat.  Highly Recommended.

That seems to about cover it. I could waffle on and on about the details of my day to day happenings, but I fear that would be rather dull. If you do indeed want to find out more about my foolish mistake when choosing which towel to use in the shower, or the outright buffoonery of forgetting to drink my specially purchased sparkling elderflower drink with lunch, then I suggest you re-assess the situation promptly and get a grip.

And there we have it, another eventful Friday night, and I’m not very much mistaken I seem to be the last person left awake in my house.

Champion.

[Chart] Mr Minimax’s January 2009 Chart

I don’t do these all that often, partly because I find it near impossible to pick favourites out of all the tunes I play, and partly because I don’t buy all that much “new” music.

I have now managed to put together 10 tracks that have been making me smile more than most recently.

I’m going to try knock one of these up every month from now on. They won’t necessarily feature “new” music, and they’ll usually have tracks from a wide range of genre’s, but they’ll always be a good indication of what I’m listening to, and kind of thing you can expect from a Mr Minimax DJ set.

Here we go.

2562 – Movern [Tectonic]
A beautiful piece of deep dub techno with a half time snare drum to squeeze a bit of dubstep appeal in there.
Works equally well in the afternoon sun as it does at 4am. Top Stuff

Baobinga & ID – Jump Up Get Hype (Gella’s Hardsteppin’ Remix) [Fat!]
A cracking re-rub of a cracking tune. Virus Syndicate never fail in my opinion, and here, Gella adds a lovely set of  steppy drums, a nice amount of glitch and a new bassline that easily matches the original.

Bassbin Twins – Pig Pen [Cool and Deadly]
Anyone with their finger vaguely on the breakbeat pulse, will have heard Woppa doing the rounds over the last year or two, possibly the most hotly anticipated single ever, but yet when it finally came, I barely touched the original, due to this outstanding piece of breaks-dubstep-techno-I don’t know what. One of the most innovative tunes in recent years, anyone trying to pigeon hole this one is wasting their time!

Drop the Lime – Good Inside [trouble & Bass]
This track is pure hype. No pretence, just a mountain of rave.

Eero Johannes – HAL Manifesto [Planet Mu]
Taken from his debut album “Eero Johannes” this is probably the most DJ friendly track. Slightly bizarre and cheesy electro, with a dash of 80′s. More home listening than dancefloor, but can do brilliantly in both environments if used right.

Kid 606 – Get In The Way [Tigerbeat6]
Another track that just doesn’t want to be defined, switching between dubstep, techno, electro and god only know what else in a matter of bars, this is wonky mayhem at it’s best.

Luke’s Anger – Jerk Chicken [Tigerbeat6]
More wonky as sin techno from the Tigerbeat camp, after a couple of minutes of driving beats, wacked out sound effects, and nicely moderated glitch, it drops down into a delightfully wonky bassline

Si Begg – Are You a Big Boy DJ? [Noodles]
This one is led by the mother of all basslines, the drums stay nicely reserved, just adding a bit of step. I would have to whole-heartedly agree with the lyric: “You can’t be that big if you ent go this in your box”

the wee djs – Base [Touchin Bass]
A bit of an oldie by some people’s standards(2006). Those people are missing out. I’ve been playing the “Fear and Lothian” album to death lately, and it was near impossible to pick a favourite to go in this chart. I went with this because it’s got a deep dirty vibe that mixes perfectly with a lot of the other tracks in this chart.

TRG – Oi! Killa [Cool and Deadly]
And finally a bit of straight up step action. It’s got crunch, dirty sub bass, and a nice set of old skool rave stabs. A brilliant example of just how right Cool and Deadly is getting it at the moment.

I hope these tracks bring you as much joy as they have brought me.

My Mix for this months Brap Podcast is a bit different to my usual DJing style.
I’ve gone down a much more laid back route than previous mixes, and picked out a selection of my favourite hip hop, downtempo and chill out tracks.
It’s my first mix in this style, but using mainly tracks that have been favourites in my collection for years, so it was a lot of fun. If you like this, keep an eye on my blog, you can expect to see more material in this vein in the future.

Enjoy.

Now, as some of you may know, I moved house about three months ago. Left Oxford and re-located myself down to Bristol.

I’ve been without internet for a while (crivens!) and the connection I do have now, is pretty shoddy. So as a result of this, I’ve had to cancel my Brap.FM show, much to my dismay.

However, being the resourceful character that I am, I’ve managed to get a few guest slots on other shows.

The first, was a 2 hour mix on the Out Of The Void Show on Brap.FM, broadcast from Void HQ in Bristol, that one is available to download HERE. No tracklisting unfortunately, as I turned up to play with a bag full of vinyl, only to discover, Ollspin has no turntables… cue half an hour of scrabbling about Spollin’s CD collection trying to find bits and bobs I recognised. It starts off with a couple of random tracks, then gets into breaks for the rest. bits and bobs of tearout, electro, and some nice good old fashioned breakbeat.

The next radio appearance was for Ollspin’s Sunday Roast Show, I played an hour set in the middle of the show, spanning, dubstep, techno, breaks, drum and bass and a bit of breakcore for good measure. There IS a tracklisting for this one… Download here and check out lots more Spolliny goodness.

In other news, I’ve done a mix for the latest Brap.FM Podcast, which should be available to download from the Brap site soon. It’s a 45 minute mix of hip hop, downtempo, chill out and electronica, from the likes of Bonobo, Boards of Canada, Flying Lotus, Jurassic 5 and Prefuse 73. Spammage coming soon.

I also have two other mixes coming… One of hard dirty techno, and one of acid electro and idm. Keep an eye on these pages for more news.

That’s about it for now, but there will be a lot more updates in the next few days, so stay tuned.

[Radio] MrMinimax on Brap.FM – 03.06.08 – Tracklisting and Archive

It’s Wednesday morning, which means I am shattered from my late night, and late for work because I’ve been twatting about at home uploading the archive.
The good news of course, is that anyone who didn’t catch the show last night can now download it and listen in their own time, and anyone who couldn’t understand me reading the names, or just wants to jog their memory can check the tracklisting in full.
Another good show, with the usual progression from breaks, through techno into darker territory, before coming down gently for the last hour with some hip hop, downtempo and chill out. No guest mix, artist showcase or exclusive tracks this time, just two hours of raw tuneage that’s been stuffing my crust over the last few weeks.

Enjoy…
