I don’t usually do this, but I felt strangely compelled…

If the dates on this blog are to be trusted, (and I am reasonably sure that they are) then it appears I have not written anything on here for over three months. So what’s going on?

Production on our short film; Flutter is going well, we’re shooting this weekend has it happens, which is very exciting, if slightly scary considering the amount of work it’s going to take to get the house in shape. The battle we’ve been through with actors was finally won yesterday, as we found our leading man, so from here onwards, it’s just a case of getting the job done.

Holy Fuck it’s time to go to work, I’ll finish you on my lunch break.

Lunch break eh? I make that four days ago, Bloody typical.

Filming has been going well, on it again tomorrow for the last day. No doubt things will be slightly hectic, trying to get everything finished in time, but I’m pretty confident we’ll get it all done.

In other news, I’m taking over Ollspin’s Sunday Roast show on Brap.FM next Sunday. From 6pm – 8pm I will be playing a fine selection of music, focusing mainly on the dancier end of my spectrum, Breaks, Techno, Dubstep and Electro, along with all the things that fill in the gaps between those. I was originally just going to be doing an hour guest mix, but he has kindly offered me the whole show. Win.

Other musical happenening in my world include the release of St. Vincent’s wonderful album; Actor, and the rapidly approaching release of Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest. The former was a relatively random purchase, and my first encounter with Annie Clark aka St.Vincent. Oh how I’ve been missing out. Actor is a really beautiful album from start to finish; it blends pop, folk and electronica with big helpings of baroque and avant-garde in a way that sounds both vintage and cutting edge at the same time. What really shines through on this album is personality, which oozes out of every little detail. Fans of Laura Marling, Imogen Heap and Grizzly Bear should love this, I know I do.

As you can see, my last post on here, all those months ago, was heralding the release of Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest. The wait is nearly over I exclaimed, somewhat inaccurately.  Now, on 24th May, the wait really is nearly over! My pre-order version should be with me by Friday at the latest, and I’m getting rather excited about that prospect. I’ve exercised a massive amount of self control and not taken up any of the leaks offered to me, partly out of respect for the band, but mainly because I don’t want to compromise the enjoyment of opening the CD case and listening to the album for the first time. The tracks I’ve heard so far have been nothing short of stunning, the lead off single Two Weeks is a beautiful pop song, more accessible than anything from Yellow House, but retaining all of the magic. A few people have been disappointing me massively by telling me that Two Weeks is the best track (it’s never nice to know you’ve already heard the best, means it’s all downhill from there), but I’ll have to wait and see. In a rather impulsive move, I purchased a ticket to see the Bear at KOKO in August. At the moment I’m the only person I know with a ticket, which would be a slightly annoying situation to remain in, but I couldn’t live with myself missing the opportunity to see them headlining a club like KOKO, even if I will be seeing them play Green Man Festival later that week. I’m going to be Grizzled out.

I think I’d better leave it at that to be honest, I’ve got lots of work to do in preparation for tomorrows filming.

Let’s see if I can make another post before August eh…

Stuff and Things.

Snow, snow snow.

Falling from the sky, covering everything in sight with a thick, crunchy layer of innocence and nationwide paralysis.

Or so I’m told. Us lucky sods in Bristol seem to have managed to avoid every last flake. Tucked away in the snug little crevice between Wales and the southern leg of England, the UK’s sweaty little cleavage stays nicely sheltered from any unwanted attacks of that awful stuff. A taxi driver once told me that his two sons had never seen snow, I seem to remember they were aged around five and seven. Now, I’ve learnt to take things that taxi drivers say with a sizeable pinch of salt, but then as the old saying goes, there’s no smoke without fire. (Or a smoke machine, guffawz. That isn’t smoke you silly buggers.) But I haven’t gathered you here today to moan about snow, or the lack thereof.

No, I have updates.

First of all, I would like to extend an invitation to you, dear reader, to the Brap Vs Void Winter Warmer All Dayer. Taking place on Saturday 21st February 2009, at The Farm pub, St. Werberghs, Bristol.Image

Now, for some reason I have been listen on the flyer as playing Minimal Techno and Progressive Breaks… Anyone hoping for a bit of deep, spacey Max, I regret to inform you that this will not be the case. I will instead by playing a set of “proper electro” funky acid, hip hop, wonky techno and a bit of ghetto tech thrown in there for good measure. As much as I would have liked to bring a bit of deepsexy techno to the line up, I hardly think it would transition well from Hip Hop, Funk and Bigbeat, into darker, heavier territory as the night progressed, and after all, electro badness is much more my style. For anyone who hasn’t been to the Farm, it’s a lovely pub, good selection of beers and ciders, and with all that great music for free, there’s really no excuse not to get yourself down there.

In the lead up to this, I will be doing a guest set on Void head-honcho Ollspin’s Sunday Roast radio show on good old Brap.FM.  That’ll be taking place on Sunday 15th Feb, 6pm – 8pm GMT.  I’ll be playing the same sort of tracks as I will be at The Farm, so any fans of Electro, Bass and Acid, be sure to tune in, and anyone who isn’t already a fan, tune in and find out what you’re missing. Maybe I could convert you…

In other news, a little change of plan in the Valentines Lucid line up, means that I am now playing 2 sets! I’ll be in the main room, early on in the night, playing big, fat, dirty breaks and psy-breaks, then after that I’ll hop over to room 2, where I will be taking things down a slightly more experimental route, lots of glitchy rhythms, bits of techno, step, electro.

I’m pretty sure that’s about it from me for today. I really aught to get round to uploading a few of those mixes I spoke about all those weeks ago… maybe later.

My Mix for this months Brap Podcast is a bit different to my usual DJing style.
I’ve gone down a much more laid back route than previous mixes, and picked out a selection of my favourite hip hop, downtempo and chill out tracks.
It’s my first mix in this style, but using mainly tracks that have been favourites in my collection for years, so it was a lot of fun. If you like this, keep an eye on my blog, you can expect to see more material in this vein in the future.

Enjoy.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Now, as some of you may know, I moved house about three months ago. Left Oxford and re-located myself down to Bristol.

I’ve been without internet for a while (crivens!) and the connection I do have now, is pretty shoddy. So as a result of this, I’ve had to cancel my Brap.FM show, much to my dismay.

However, being the resourceful character that I am, I’ve managed to get a few guest slots on other shows.

The first, was a 2 hour mix on the Out Of The Void Show on Brap.FM, broadcast from Void HQ in Bristol, that one is available to download HERE. No tracklisting unfortunately, as I turned up to play with a bag full of vinyl, only to discover, Ollspin has no turntables… cue half an hour of scrabbling about Spollin’s CD collection trying to find bits and bobs I recognised. It starts off with a couple of random tracks, then gets into breaks for the rest. bits and bobs of tearout, electro, and some nice good old fashioned breakbeat.

The next radio appearance was for Ollspin’s Sunday Roast Show, I played an hour set in the middle of the show, spanning, dubstep, techno, breaks, drum and bass and a bit of breakcore for good measure. There IS a tracklisting for this one… Download here and check out lots more Spolliny goodness.

In other news, I’ve done a mix for the latest Brap.FM Podcast, which should be available to download from the Brap site soon. It’s a 45 minute mix of hip hop, downtempo, chill out and electronica, from the likes of Bonobo, Boards of Canada, Flying Lotus, Jurassic 5 and Prefuse 73. Spammage coming soon.

I also have two other mixes coming… One of hard dirty techno, and one of acid electro and idm. Keep an eye on these pages for more news.

That’s about it for now, but there will be a lot more updates in the next few days, so stay tuned.

Mr Minimax on the Brap.fm Podcast June/July. Download Now

This Month, I, Mr Minimax, am taking over the Brap.fm podcast, and putting together a 50 minute blend of music that’s been making me tick lately, as well as a few of my favourites.

My musical history goes back a long way, playing in bands for years, lots of noisy punk and metal music, gigs in pubs, blisters from guitar strings. That was me. I started producing around the same time I started clubbing, and from there, things have been slowly building to where I am today. I now co-run oxford club night Fresh Out the Box. We have a reputation as a breaks night, but in the past 6 months we have seen guests such as Alex Smoke, Will Saul and Cassetteboy, so things are a bit more varied than you’d think. My tastes span pretty much everything under the sun and I try to give everything a chance, judging every track on its individual merits.

DJ wise, my club sets and radio sets vary greatly. Catch me in a club and you’re likely to hear a selection of breaks, techno, house, on a varying scale of heaviness depending on the night. Radio however, is totally different kettle of fish. The only policy is that if I like it, I play it. Be it indie, breakcore, soul or ambient. So far the formula seems to be working well, and listener figures are rising every week.
This mix, is a middle ground between the two platforms. It flits between genres and covers a wide range of the music I’m into, while still retaining a very danceable quality and a solid groove which keeps steady throughout.
If you like what you hear, you can catch me on Brap.fm every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the Month from 10 till midnight, and now, every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the Month, from 4 till 6 in the afternoon. Tuesdays will generally take things down a more experimental route, playing absolutely anything I feel like, guest mixes, artist showcases, label spotlights and demo tracks from up and coming producers. Saturdays will be a lot closer to my club sets, lots of big, beat driven, bass heavy dancefloor material, less features, more unadulterated music!

Thanks for listening, with any luck it will push as many of your buttons as it has mine.
Anyone interested in booking me for their night (which I heartily recommend) send an email to minimax@brap.fm and we’ll talk business.

Anyway, enough from me. I’ll let the music do the talking.

This Month at FOTB we’ve got breakbeat stalwarts Ben & Lex, up and coming producer That Girl DJ both making their FOTB debuts, as well as neo-blogster Jung returning for his second set in 6 months. Also gracing the booth is our own Mr Minimax, rounding off the night with his blend of Breaks, Techno and Dubstep, sure to have people dancing till the lights come on.

Ben & Lex
The Devonshire duo have been wowing audiences in the South West for over eight years, and now their own vinyl releases have now confirmed them as one of the hottest properties in breakbeat.

Their debut single “Cosa Nostra” was released on Functional Breaks in 2003 and received universal DJ and radio support around the world. Their second release for the label followed soon after, a double ‘A’ sided single “Proper Tasty / Reconsidered” which firmly stamped its mark on the breaks scene with radio play on Radio One, Ministry of Sound FM, Breaks FM, several other international shows and has had DJ support from the likes of Freq Nasty, Krafty Kuts, Skool of Thought, Tayo and Steelzawheelz to name but a few.

As well as continuing to release on Functional Breaks – their tune “Soundgal“, as featured on Freq Nasty’s Breakspoll 2006 compilation, is released as Functional #44 – the boys have been approached by the likes of Big Square for “Floor Burn“, Trusted for “Funky Music” (also a top ten O2 ringtone) and Drum and Breaks for “Raw 2 Da Floor/ Le Chunk” ft MC Spee (Dreadzone).

Their distinctive sound can be heard on their weekly Nuskool Breaks radio show. Ben & Lex have also had an exclusive half-hour mix on Radio 1 for Annie Nightingale and they are residents at the UK’s longest running monthly breakbeat night, Beatz & Bobz, where they regularly support break beat heavyweights such as Rennie Pilgrem, Freq Nasty, Tayo, James Lavelle (Unkle) and The Freestylers as well as giants such as the Wu tang, Afrika Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash, Adam F & Fresh and DJ Zinc.

As well as critically acclaimed sets across the UK, and The Glade and Beautiful Days festivals, they are gaining international kudos with recent appearances at the Miami Winter Music Conference, Dangerous Drums in Berlin, Mission Dance Winter Sessions in Mannheim and the Break Nation festival in Seville where they rocked it to a crowd of over 10,000 Spanish nutters!!

They are now also running their own label Ape Music (with releases & remixes from Will White (Propellorheads), Transformer Man, Entity, Afghan Headspin & more) and with many big remixes already lined up for the rest of this year, these two Westcountry Warriors look like they will be impossible to escape, so go see them and treat yourself to a damn good party!

That Girl DJ
Who is That Girl DJ? Starting out under the watchful eye of mentors Vigi and Mr B (Streetwise Recordings / Boomslang), That Girl DJ has been quickly making her way into the scene and moving up the ranks over the past year. Sets at Herbal, Urban Nights and Lockside Lounge in London, Ambush in Nottingham, Future Funk in Sheffield, Gobbstopper in Taunton, Magik Bullet in Plymouth and Spectrum in Leicester have made her a name to watch out for! Add to that her regular appearances at the night she helps run and promote, the Breakspoll award-nominated Boomslang in Cambridge (supporting artists such as Stanton Warriors, Atomic Hooligan, Tayo, Stanton Warriors, Slyde, Soul of Man, Scratch Perverts, Rennie Pilgrem, Plump DJs and many more) and you have a rising star in the breakbeat scene. When she’s not rocking the dancefloor, That Girl DJ hosts the Boomslang Breaks show on NSB Radio, the worlds biggest breaks radio station, playing a fortnightly two-hour selection of her own flavour of breaks, electro and wonky house. Her very first tune is due for release in early June 2008 backed up by wicked remixes from Sam Hell and Australia’s Karl Sav.

Jung
From an introverted five year old with a deep founded love of an early 90’s mixtape found in his dad’s car, to a twenty three year old with residencies and multiple radioshows under his belt, Jung is by no doubt a fast mover.
Whether it be in the booth for his residency at Swindon’s famous (and now defunct) Brunel Rooms nightclub, the spare bedroom for his fortnightly show on NSB Radio or simply smashing the living shit out of various night’s in Oxford, London & Southampton to name but a few.
His style is probably as wild and flamboyant as Kate Moss’ choice in men; talented, dirty and always the inspiration behind a messy weekend. That, coupled with the skill akin to the Dewaele brother’s talents of flirting with a multitude of genres as if the borders between them never existed, Jung expertly flits from House to Electro through Breaks, Techno, Hip Hop, Rock & everything in between.

[Radio] MrMinimax on Brap.FM – 03.06.08 – Tracklisting and Archive

It’s Wednesday morning, which means I am shattered from my late night, and late for work because I’ve been twatting about at home uploading the archive.
The good news of course, is that anyone who didn’t catch the show last night can now download it and listen in their own time, and anyone who couldn’t understand me reading the names, or just wants to jog their memory can check the tracklisting in full.
Another good show, with the usual progression from breaks, through techno into darker territory, before coming down gently for the last hour with some hip hop, downtempo and chill out. No guest mix, artist showcase or exclusive tracks this time, just two hours of raw tuneage that’s been stuffing my crust over the last few weeks.

Enjoy…

Archive Fail…but some LIVE goodies to tide you over…

I need to apologise to all of you who tried to download the archive for Tuesdays show. somewhere along the upload process, something went a bit wrong, and the link hasn’t been working… however Moif is going to take a look at it, and with any luck, it should all be fixed by this evening and ready for downloading.

In the mean time, I would like to draw to your attention, the new project I have been working on over the last few weeks. Transferring my production into a live format. I’ve been slaving away on Ableton Live, trying to set up a way of performing my music live. I wont get into the techy side of things now, but it’s all turned out brilliantly, and I’ve got plans to take it as far as I possibly can.
I gigged the set out at Fresh Out The Box last Friday, which went down really well, but I didn’t manage to record it, so this morning I knocked up a slightly shorter version of a very similar set. There’s a few sketchy areas, but that’s the magic of live recording isn’t it. I’ve uploaded it, and I’m really looking for as much feedback as possible on it. As I’m so new to it, there’s bound to be areas where I could do with a bit of constructive criticism, and of course, anyone who wants to tell me what a good job I’ve done is more than welcome to….
In terms of tracklisting, it’s a bit vague, as the drums are interchanged throughout, and I guess the only distinguishing feature between the tracks is the basslines… It’s a pretty good mix of my styles, a bit less down the glitchy avenue that my EP featured, and a bit more dancefloor orientated, as that is where this project is best executed, in loud dirty clubs.

The Tracklisting looks a little something like this…

……………………..……………………..…………
The Nitrous Tune (samples used throughout)
–Savoute (Drums)
The Atheist
Got to You the Long Way Round
Arch 28.04
Remdog – Descent (Mr Minimax Remix) *Instrumental*
Chaplinston
Laying Cable
Savoute
