This Month at FOTB we’ve got breakbeat stalwarts Ben & Lex, up and coming producer That Girl DJ both making their FOTB debuts, as well as neo-blogster Jung returning for his second set in 6 months. Also gracing the booth is our own Mr Minimax, rounding off the night with his blend of Breaks, Techno and Dubstep, sure to have people dancing till the lights come on.

Ben & Lex
The Devonshire duo have been wowing audiences in the South West for over eight years, and now their own vinyl releases have now confirmed them as one of the hottest properties in breakbeat.

Their debut single “Cosa Nostra” was released on Functional Breaks in 2003 and received universal DJ and radio support around the world. Their second release for the label followed soon after, a double ‘A’ sided single “Proper Tasty / Reconsidered” which firmly stamped its mark on the breaks scene with radio play on Radio One, Ministry of Sound FM, Breaks FM, several other international shows and has had DJ support from the likes of Freq Nasty, Krafty Kuts, Skool of Thought, Tayo and Steelzawheelz to name but a few.

As well as continuing to release on Functional Breaks – their tune “Soundgal“, as featured on Freq Nasty’s Breakspoll 2006 compilation, is released as Functional #44 – the boys have been approached by the likes of Big Square for “Floor Burn“, Trusted for “Funky Music” (also a top ten O2 ringtone) and Drum and Breaks for “Raw 2 Da Floor/ Le Chunk” ft MC Spee (Dreadzone).

Their distinctive sound can be heard on their weekly Nuskool Breaks radio show. Ben & Lex have also had an exclusive half-hour mix on Radio 1 for Annie Nightingale and they are residents at the UK’s longest running monthly breakbeat night, Beatz & Bobz, where they regularly support break beat heavyweights such as Rennie Pilgrem, Freq Nasty, Tayo, James Lavelle (Unkle) and The Freestylers as well as giants such as the Wu tang, Afrika Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash, Adam F & Fresh and DJ Zinc.

As well as critically acclaimed sets across the UK, and The Glade and Beautiful Days festivals, they are gaining international kudos with recent appearances at the Miami Winter Music Conference, Dangerous Drums in Berlin, Mission Dance Winter Sessions in Mannheim and the Break Nation festival in Seville where they rocked it to a crowd of over 10,000 Spanish nutters!!

They are now also running their own label Ape Music (with releases & remixes from Will White (Propellorheads), Transformer Man, Entity, Afghan Headspin & more) and with many big remixes already lined up for the rest of this year, these two Westcountry Warriors look like they will be impossible to escape, so go see them and treat yourself to a damn good party!

That Girl DJ
Who is That Girl DJ? Starting out under the watchful eye of mentors Vigi and Mr B (Streetwise Recordings / Boomslang), That Girl DJ has been quickly making her way into the scene and moving up the ranks over the past year. Sets at Herbal, Urban Nights and Lockside Lounge in London, Ambush in Nottingham, Future Funk in Sheffield, Gobbstopper in Taunton, Magik Bullet in Plymouth and Spectrum in Leicester have made her a name to watch out for! Add to that her regular appearances at the night she helps run and promote, the Breakspoll award-nominated Boomslang in Cambridge (supporting artists such as Stanton Warriors, Atomic Hooligan, Tayo, Stanton Warriors, Slyde, Soul of Man, Scratch Perverts, Rennie Pilgrem, Plump DJs and many more) and you have a rising star in the breakbeat scene. When she’s not rocking the dancefloor, That Girl DJ hosts the Boomslang Breaks show on NSB Radio, the worlds biggest breaks radio station, playing a fortnightly two-hour selection of her own flavour of breaks, electro and wonky house. Her very first tune is due for release in early June 2008 backed up by wicked remixes from Sam Hell and Australia’s Karl Sav.

Jung
From an introverted five year old with a deep founded love of an early 90’s mixtape found in his dad’s car, to a twenty three year old with residencies and multiple radioshows under his belt, Jung is by no doubt a fast mover.
Whether it be in the booth for his residency at Swindon’s famous (and now defunct) Brunel Rooms nightclub, the spare bedroom for his fortnightly show on NSB Radio or simply smashing the living shit out of various night’s in Oxford, London & Southampton to name but a few.
His style is probably as wild and flamboyant as Kate Moss’ choice in men; talented, dirty and always the inspiration behind a messy weekend. That, coupled with the skill akin to the Dewaele brother’s talents of flirting with a multitude of genres as if the borders between them never existed, Jung expertly flits from House to Electro through Breaks, Techno, Hip Hop, Rock & everything in between.

Friday May 16th at the Cellar Oxford
Fresh Out The Box Live Special feat.

Live Comedy, Live Music, Good Times

Cassetteboy

Cassetteboy played to a sold out crowd at the Cellar in 2005. So it’s with open arms we welcome them back to perform their new stage show from the new album “Keep On Breathing”. (Released 2nd June 2008, on Barry’s Bootlegs)Cassetteboy are childhood friends Michael Bollen and Steve Warlin. Until now they have remained anonymous, fearing lawsuits for massive copyright infringement. With their third album, they have somewhat unwisely decided to publicly admit their crimes.

“Carry on Breathing” tells the story of life itself, from birth to death, through the medium of bits of Eastenders, nicked northern soul loops and knob gags.

“Carry on Breathing” is released on the same day as Michael’s debut novel, Earth Inc. (Picnic Publishing). Stephen Merchant (The Office) has described Earth Inc. as “reminiscent of Douglas Adams…the funniest work of fiction since The Bible.”

With festivals such as Glastonbury and Glade already booked in for the summer we are honoured to have them back on the Cellar stage for this very exclusive show.

DJ Rubbish

Born and raised on the mean streets of Peckham, Shaun Pubis (b.1977) aka DJ Rubbish has spent the past few years honing his talents as a world class MC. The extremely rare and highly sought after Rubbish Selection Vol. 1 introduced an unsuspecting public to the world of Pubis back in early 2001, and set out his characteristic haphazard lyrical delivery and uncensored content.

2002 saw the release of the counterculture classic freestyle LP Armageddon Session which received massive critical acclaim. Muzik Magazine described it as a “very angry The Streets with a degree in post-Afghan war politics” and said it “manages a joke on about 15 different post-modern levels at once.” [Muzik Magazine, June 2002]. NME liked it so much they rated DJ Rubbish 29th coolest person in rock 2002, describing him as “utterly underground” [NME, 2nd November 2002].

From then Shaun has gone from strength to strength, becoming the subject of a documentary Who Is DJ Rubbish? (released as a DVD in 2003) and working on numerous collaborative projects, the results of which can be found on Proper Propaganda (2003). Mainly recorded in late 2002 this LP features the talents of Cassetteboy, Project Brothers, GM Beats, and DJ Grunder and took the mastering skills of Damian Taylor (U.N.K.L.E., Bjork, South, Adam Freeland) into new groundbreaking territory. Radical “He’s A Cunt” Directors Save the Wolf produced a video promo for “Coming Right Out” released in July 2003.

As well as spending a lot of time in the studio, Shaun has also managed to maintain a rigorous live schedule which has taken him, and his message, all over the country, often in the company of label-mates Cassetteboy and mentor Barry Evans.

Mr Minimax

Mr Minimax aka Rob Dunstone is a young man from Oxford, but this isn’t another boat race story. His upbringing gave him solid music foundations with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Stravinsky as listening material. From a very early age an infatuation with music was apparent and he jumped at any opportunity to make noise, be it using an instrument, his mouth, or whatever item was closest to hand. While his tastes were broad and eclectic, his knowledge of music creation was limited to first hand experience.

Thanks to a love of The Prodigy it dawned on Rob that music could be created without a band, or even “proper” instruments. A light switched on in his head and hasn’t dimmed since.

Rob now holds a residency at Oxford club night ‘Fresh Out the Box’ and has several releases under his belt that display style of downtempo and experimental electronics, through techno to breakcore carnage.

‘Mr Minimax – Knights Move Thinking’ (MZYKN008) is out now and available at www.myuzyk.net

At the beginning of spring Eclectric and Fresh Out the Box team up and present the man who brought us our favorite album of 2007, Gregor Tresher. Check the links for a sneaky peak of his dj’ing and production…

Hailing from the Rhine-Main region of Frankfurt, Gregor sites influences including Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, Duran Duran, Placebo, Front 242 and Laurent Garnier. Tresher has experienced a phenomenal rise over the past 3 years: supported by the likes of Anthony Rother, Billy Nasty, Dave Mothersole and Sven Väth, he has released on labels including Datapunk, Cocoon, 541, Kosmo and Electrix.

His debut long player “A Thousand Nights” was released to critical acclaim in late 2007, a collection of deep, dancefloor-orientated tracks, existing somewhere between minimal, tech-house, techno and electro. Having played only a handful of UK gigs so far this is certainly not one to miss.

FOTB presents;

Alex Smoke LIVE

15th Feb

The Cellar

£5 all night

FOTB are proud to present the Uk’s number 1 minimal musician; Alex Smoke.

He will be performing live in the Cellar on Feb 15th.

Alex Smoke is unique talent to emerge from the Glasgow music scene. This young producer is pushing the boundaries of electronic music with his innovative style of fusing deep European minimalism with emotional strings and intelligent electro rhythms.

Alex Smoke has a background in classical music which is very evident from the quality of his arrangements. His debut release ‘Random As’ came out on underground Glasgow label ‘Savalas Records’ to critical acclaim in Jan 2002. Jockey Slut described it as “the kind of record a pissed off Funk D’Void might make”, with IDJ claiming it was a “a dark minimal experiment in sinister atmospherics”. Alex Smoke can already count the likes of Andrew Weatherall, DJ Hell and the Ghostly International crew as fans of his work.

His coveted releases on Berlin label Vakant have cemented his club credentials and found their way into boxes and laptops of innovative Djs everywhere. Not content with a slew of killer twelve’s, Alex Smoke remixes have constantly been in demand, recently renovating Mylo, Alex Under and Vector Lovers.

To get a better idea of his music check out his first album “Incommunicado” or his more recent LP “Paradolia”.

As a special first gig of the year treat it’s free before 10:30. A post Christmas present from FOTB!

Fresh Out The Box presents:

18th Jan @ the Cellar, Oxford

Brothers Bud

Brothers Bud are Dom Farrington and Ollie Gregson. Contrary to popular myth, the ‘Brothers’ are not actually related and with Dom’s music history ranging from funk through hip-hop and with a healthy dose of late-eighties rave culture and Ollie’s more ‘traditional’ musical upbringing, (Grade 8 drummer with distinction, don’t you know?) they certainly must have had a lot to talk about when they first met! Their differences in approach come together to form something great – chunky beats, screeching leads and bottomless subs – not to mention their production skills. Dom also has a nice little sideline in the more commercial side of dance music with his heavy involvement with Ministry of Sound who are currently licencing a number of his productions. See if you can spot the tunes!
With three decades of DJing experience between them, these guys are no strangers to spinning a few tunes. Brothers Bud launched the first night for White Rhino in Brighton and still hold a 11 year residency at Atomic Jam. They have appeared on Metalheadz tours, the Rizla tour with Bugged Out and the Finger Lickin 5th Birthday Party. Dom headlined the Gatecrasher Black and White Ball whilst working as SolarStone DJs, and at 14 he had a show on Midlands’ pirate radio station Freedom FM, (including jingles!), and also ran pirate station, Bass Station 105.9FM, launching him into the early rave era with residencies at Pandemonium, Fantasia and Quest.

Ladies and gentlemen it is with great pleasure we bring you the dope beats of the Midlands finest – we give you The Brothers Bud.
